In 2007, The Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance (GEMA) and the Georgetown Sports and Entertainment Law Society announced their partnership to form GEMALaw.
Under the auspices of GEMA, GEMALaw was established for students, alumni, faculty, parents and friends in the Georgetown community who share an interest in legal issues affecting the sports, entertainment, and media industry.
GEMALaw strengthens the ties among alumni in the media, sports and entertainment industries, supports career development for Georgetown Law students and serves as a resource to the Georgetown University Law Center.
The Mission of GEMALaw is to:
- Assist in the development of sports, entertainment and media law programs at Georgetown Law;
- Elevate the profile of Georgetown Law in the sports, entertainment and media industry;
- Foster and support career development for its members in sports, entertainment and media;
- Facilitate and sustain collegiality among its members and encourage involvement in the Georgetown community;
- Strengthen the ties between the University and its alumni in the sports, entertainment and media communities;
- Give back to the community and Georgetown Law through philanthropic endeavors related to sports, entertainment, media and the arts.
GEMALaw Speakers Series
GEMALaw hosts numerous speakers on campus for breakfasts, brown bag lunches and panel events. These speakers series events allow students to interact with alumni and executives in the sports, entertainment and media industries in a more intimate setting. Previous GEMALaw Speakers Series events have featured Savannah Guthrie (L’02 ) (Co-Anchor, The Today Show), Stan Kasten (former President of the Washington Nationals), and Joe Berlinger (Director & Producer of the documentary “Crude”).
GEMALaw Sports & Entertainment Law Symposium
GEMALaw’s signature event is the GEMALaw Sports & Entertainment Law Symposium. Started in conjunction with the launch of GEMALaw, the GEMALaw Symposium is a full-day event featuring various panels addressing hot button issues in the sports, entertainment and media industries. The Symposium also provides students an opportunity to interact with prominent Georgetown alumni in the media, sports and entertainment industries, while also allowing alumni to network with each other. During the Symposium, GEMALaw presents a distinguished alumnus with the GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award.

The GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award
Each year, GEMALaw presents an alumnus with the GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award. As an alumnus of Georgetown Law, the recipient of the GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award represents outstanding professional accomplishment as well as a long-standing devotion to the sports, entertainment, and media industry. Previous recipients of the award include James Duff (L’81), President and Chief Executive Officer, Freedom Forum and Chief Executive Officer, Newseum and Diversity Institute. Ed Cohen (L’70), Sen. George Mitchell (L’61) and Greta Van Susteren (L’79, LL.M.’82). The 2012-2013 GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award recipient is Andrew Brandt (L’85), NFL Business Analyst for ESPN.
