Paul T. Cappuccio (C'83), Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Time Warner hosted breakfast for GEMA NY.

Mr. Cappuccio is the chief legal officer at Time Warner. He oversees the worldwide management of Time Warner's legal functions, collaborating with all of its operating businesses. Previously, from August 1999 until January 2001, Mr. Cappuccio was Senior Vice President and General Counsel at America Online.

Previously, Rodale President and CEO Steven Pleshette Murphy (GU, College '75)  hosted GEMA members for breakfast on Aug. 14 at Rodale's New York offices.  Murphy kicked off GEMA's New York breakfast series by sharing with his guests insights into his career path and his passion for best-in-class content.  Armed with a major in literature, Murphy said he graduated from Georgetown with the goal to be the next Max Perkins.   Along his varied career journey -- which spanned from Simon & Schuster and EMI (for 8 years) to Disney Publishing and Rodale -- Murphy said he assumed editorial responsibilities for a brief period, but he kept getting pulled to the business side.  His mantra, however, never changed.   As he says, "it all starts with the edit, " -- or if you're in the music business --  "it's about the A&R."

In this rapidly evolving media landscape, Murphy says a new skill set is required.  He advises to be both left brained and right brained -- both strategic and tactical.  And if you have to lean towards one, he adds "better to be tactical."  As the head of Rodale, the world's leading health and wellness publisher, Murphy has transformed the company from a small publishing business rooted in organics, into a highly creative content company known not only for its strong brands and emphasis on inspired editorial and innovative marketing, but also for its ability to connect with customers through multiple media formats.  As one GEMA guest said, "It was interesting to hear that (Murphy) sees video as one of the keys to the company's digital strategy.  To me, he is really reinventing Rodale, which today is 'print' to 'lifestyle' brands that are sight, sound and motion ....as well as social networking, which I can see would be huge in the health and well-being areas."  Rodale is publisher of Men's Health, Women's Health, Prevention, Best Life, Organic Gardening, Bicyclying, Runner's World and Running Times magazines, as well as such best-selling books as Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and The South Beach Diet.   Another GEMA guest added, "I found his approach toward marketing and his thoughts on management inspiring.  I intend to apply relevant insights to my business as I continue to grow it."
