First GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award to be presented to
Edward L. Cohen (L ’71) Principal, Lerner Enterprises and Principal Owner, Washington Nationals

The Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance (GEMA) and the Georgetown Sports and Entertainment Law Society announce they have officially joined forces to form GEMALaw. Under the auspices of GEMA, GEMALaw is for students, alumni, faculty, parents and friends in the Georgetown community who share an interest in legal issues affecting the sports, entertainment, and media industry. The purpose of GEMALaw is to increase connections between students and professionals and to build a stronger presence of GEMA programming in sports, entertainment and media related legal issues on the GULC campus and in the cities where GEMA has chapters.

The Mission of GEMALaw is to:

• Assist in the development of sports, entertainment and media law programs at Georgetown University Law Center,
• Elevate the profile of Georgetown University Law Center in sports, entertainment and media,
• Foster and support career development for its members in sports, entertainment and media,
• Facilitate and sustain collegiality among its members and encourage involvement in the life of Georgetown,
• Strengthen the ties between the University and its alumni in the sports, entertainment and media communities,
• Give back to the community and Georgetown University Law Center through philanthropic endeavors related to sports, entertainment, media and the arts.

Annually GEMALaw will present the GEMALaw Alumni Achievement Award
As an alumnus of the Georgetown University Law Center, the recipient represents outstanding professional accomplishment as well as a long-standing devotion to the sports, entertainment, and media industry.

2008 Awardee
An alumnus of the Georgetown University Law Center, Edward L. Cohen has helped elevate the status of sports in Washington, D.C., bringing back baseball to the Nation’s Capital after an absence of almost 35 years. With the introduction of the Washington Nationals, Mr. Cohen has helped create hundreds of new jobs, and with the construction of the new Nationals’ Stadium, hopes to revitalize the Southeastern DC area.
