One of the founding principles that Georgetown University continues to uphold is a clear commitment to justice and the common good. GEMA continues that Georgetown tradition in its own way by offering events in which GEMA members can gather, network and socialize while honoring a philanthropic cause. The event may be organized to support a particular need of the university or a worthy cause to which a GEMA member is dedicated. GEMA is currently working on a number of events to support philanthropic initiatives. Please stay tuned to GEMA-Hoyas.org and check GEMACALENDAR for upcoming information.

If you have a philanthropic event idea you would like GEMA to consider, please forward your request to info@GEMA-hoyas.org.

GEMA LA Philanthropic Initiative

Blessed Sacrament Career Week—January 28th – February 1st, 2008

GEMA-LA kicked off its Philanthropic Initiative by partnering with Blessed Sacrament, a K-8 Jesuit school in Hollywood, CA whose lack of resources limits the students’ exposure to the Arts and entertainment.

January 30 and 31 GEMA members volunteered to give presentations to Blessed Sacrament students during the school’s annual career week.

Presentations ranged from 30 min – 1 hr in length and included topics such as film finance, digital music composition, yoga, song structure, writing children’s literature, writing and producing, and careers in film.

What some of our volunteers had to say:

“The experience was great – the kids were incredibly enthusiastic and the faculty were helpful and friendly. Everyone seemed very appreciative – so much so that my second session went on for an extra twenty minutes.” –Stu Pollard, Pollard Film Consultants

“I had a great time speaking with the students and teachers – I think they really enjoyed my presentation on career opportunities in the film industry. I had a number of great questions from the students – mostly, they wanted to know what celebrities I knew personally and how much money they could make doing different jobs. One 5th grader asked me (very articulately I might add) how the writer’s strike was impacting my work. I was inspired by the students’ enthusiasm.” –Jennifer Anderson, Netflix

“My biggest impression was that a lot more of the students had seen our racier programming (i.e. Nip/Tuck & The Shield) than I would have guessed.” –Paul Harris, Writer/Producer FX Networks

“I had a blast showing the kids many different ways of making music - from melody to rhythm, vocals to percussion - everyone got a chance to learn about composition and performance elements. I think they especially loved learning about different ways in which the body itself can be an instrument and ways to care for it. Then, we all created and performed a song on the spot! We all had fun and everyone learned something new.” –Amy Clarke, Musician/Performer
